A Look Back at Travel Writing in 2023: A Conversation With the Editors of Intrepid Times

by Jennifer Roberts

As we jump into 2024, Nathan and I wanted to take a moment to step back and reflect on some of the themes and patterns that we saw in our little corner of the travel writing world in 2023. It’s no secret that travel writing suffered during the years of the pandemic, and it turns out that it seems to have had some interesting lasting effects on the travel writing of the past year. During this conversation, we take a moment to analyze the tendencies and lessons that were carried into 2023, as well as what we hope and expect for travel writing in 2024.

The conversation took a couple of interesting turns, including veering into a conversation about the benefits of traveling alone vs traveling with others. We also touch on the role that humor and fun can play in travel writing (and our experience of the world), as well as a few challenges that we’d love to see our community take on this year. After you listen, we’d love to hear the role that travel writing took on in your life in 2023!
