Intrepid Times is excited to announce our 13th travel writing competition – with our most generous prize to date.
We plan journeys, but those plans often unravel. When travel is disrupted, when we are forced into uncertainty and improvisation, we often learn the most about where we are, and about ourselves. This writing competition explores the experience of travel when things don’t go as planned.
Write a true, 1800-2500-word travel story on the theme “When Things Fall Apart.” We are looking for satisfying narratives that encapsulate a complete story. We prize precise use of language, efficient storytelling, and a strong emotional connection that will linger with readers.
Stories will be evaluated by the Intrepid Times editorial team, and one winner and up to four runners-up will be published on Intrepid Times. The winner will be paid $500 USD, our most generous prize to date, while runners-up accepted for publication will be paid our standard writer’s fee.
We strongly recommend writers take a moment to read some of our recent stories and past competition winners to get a sense of what we publish at Intrepid Times. It goes without saying that pieces generated or edited by AI will not be considered.
Standard entry is free and open now. Writers looking to improve their craft may choose to workshop their entry with travel writing editors as part of the Travel Writing Certificate course (April 8-29). Please join our occasional newsletter with the form below to proceed to the submission page:

Entries are now closed. A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part. Winners will be announced in late June.
